Four years ago as a high school junior, I had a one track mind–I would become a professional golfer on the heels of a full-ride scholarship somewhere far away from my hometown of Memphis. Clearly, that’s not how things turned out.
I stayed home to go to the U of M because it gave me the best financial package. I wasn’t too thrilled about it at the time, but it turned out to be a fantastic decision. In two and a half years at Memphis, I’ve discovered a passion–sports journalism–and have managed to land a great internship in exactly that field.
I’m currently in my third year working in the Athletic Media Relations office within the Athletic Department at the University of Memphis. I’m in charge of all public relations tasks (press releases, web updates, twitter/facebook, media guides, etc.) for the golf and rifle teams. I also write the gameday stories for men’s basketball, women’s soccer, and football in addition to assisting with various design work within the office.
From here, I have to figure out where I want to go. Hopefully, staying home and saving money in undergrad will afford me the opportunity to get outside of Memphis after college and see where I end up.
