Knoxville, Tenn. – Tennessee (10-4) made 12-of-21 from long range and led from start to finish in a 104-84 victory over Memphis Wednesday night at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn.
Will Coleman scored 17 points and Will Barton added 14 of his own, but the Tigers (11-3) struggled from the field (30-of-65) and the charity stripe (14-of-26) and couldn’t mount a comeback against the hot-shooting Volunteers.
Melvin Goins started the barrage of trifectas for Tennessee just 44 seconds into the game when he took a pass from Scotty Hopson and drained the triple for an early 3-0 advantage.
Memphis fought back to narrow the deficit to 14-10 after a triple from Charles Carmouche at the 15:40 mark, but Tennessee responded with 10-0 run to seize control of the contest and never looked back. Despite the Tigers closing on a 7-0 run sparked by five points from DJ Stephens, the Volunteers took at 49-34 lead into the break.
Freshmen Tobias Harris led the way for Tennessee, scoring 17 points and grabbing 13 points in a double-double effort as the Volunteers outrebounded the Tigers 41-33 and scored 42 points in the paint. Scotty Hopson went 6-of-12 from the field en route to a 16-point performance, while Goins made all four of his attempts from deep on the way to scoring 15 points.
Stephens finished with nine points and six rebounds in the losing effort, while Drew Barham and Antonio Barton finished with nine points and eight points, respectively. Memphis committed 16 turnovers leading to 23 Tennessee points and allowed the Volunteers to score 19 in transition.
